Applications FAQ

Renewing The Sanford Guide to Antimicrobial Therapy App

The iOS App sold on the App Store was released initially in June 2011 and is updated monthly. The first year of updates, from June 2011, is included in the purchase price. In June 2012, you must re-subscribe to continue to receive updates. If you choose not to re-subscribe, you will still have the content, as updated through June 2012. When you do re-subscribe, you will then be on an annual subscription cycle starting from the time of re-subscription. The Android App was initially released in July 2011. You must re-subscribe in July 2012 to continue to receive updates. Otherwise, the process and cycles for Android will mirror that for the iOS App.
Watch for further announcements concerning the renewal process.

How is the content of the Sanford Guide App organized?

The Sanford Guide App is organized as follows:

Disease/Clinical Condition = the treatment tables (1, 11, 12, 13, 14)
Bacterial Organisms = the organism focused tables (2, 5, 6)
Therapeutic Adjuncts = prophylaxis and immunization tables (15, 20)
Tools/Tables = Bacterial Table 4 and the activity subtables for fungi and viruses (11, 14)
Drug Information is organized by drug, rather than by table. CrCl calculator, renal adjustment (on tablets) Usage, dosing, dose adjustments, adverse effects, activity, pharmacology and interactions are now on a single page for that agent.

Internal Links – Drug regimens on the disease/clinical condition pages are linked to the corresponding drug pages. Related topics and other relevant information are also linked.
Overview Pages – For broad disease topics, e.g., meningitis, and drug categories, e.g., fluoroquinolones, Overview pages provide a signpost linking to related topics.

What devices support the Sanford Guide App?

Apple devices: The Sanford Guide App is available for iPhone®, iPad® and iPod Touch® devices running iOS 4 or higher.

Android devices: The Sanford Guide App is available for Android® phones and tablets running v.2.2 (recommended), v.1.6 (minimum).

Content Display Differences on Tablets and Phones

The Sanford Guide apps are "universal" to use Apple terminology. This means that the app detects the device and optimizes display of its content depending on screen size. On tablet-sized devices, e.g., iPad, Galaxy Tab, etc., certain large tables are displayed in full. These include the Renal Adjustment (Table 17A) and the Antibacterial Agents Spectra of Activity tables. On small form devices, e.g., iPhone and Android phones, the Renal Adjustment table does not display, and the Antibacterial Agents Spectra of Activity chart is divided to display by drug category. On phones, renal dose adjustments are found on the drug page.

Calculators

On tablet devices, calculators may be accessed in several ways: 1) from the Renal Adjustments table by tapping the Calculator button; 2) by selecting Calculators from the Tables/Tools Menu; 3) by tapping the Body Weight and Creatinine Clearance link on relevant drug pages; and 4) by searching for Calculators in the Index. On phones, the calculators may be accessed as above, with the exception of the Renal Adjustment table option.

Operation of the Creatinine Clearance (CrCl) Calculator

Select male/female using the radio button, and tap the "Age in Years" box to display the keyboard. Enter age, height, weight, and serum creatinine values. Tap "Calculate," and the results will be displayed. Look up drugs by tapping a letter and choosing a drug from the list. You will be taken to the drug page with a focus on the renal adjustment dosing. Tap the "Body Weight and Creatinine Clearance" link to return to the calculator results screen. To dismiss the current results and enter new values, tap either the "X" or "OK" button, and choose "Reset Inputs" rather than "Calculate."

From the Renal Adjustment table, operation of the calculator is the same except for the handling of the redirection to drug information along with the presentation of the calculator showing as a floating object. While using the calculator from the Renal Adjustment table, drug links will take you to the relevant row in the table for the selected drug. The floating calculator can be shown or hidden by toggling the "Calculator" button, and it can be positioned on the screen by gesturing the motion handle with your finger. The motion handle looks like a cross with arrows pointing out of it.

Additional Calculator Features

The calculator interface is equipped with integrated conversion capabilities. Values default to using Imperial Units, but it is convert to Metric (SI). The first method is to take advantage of the integrated conversion while you are entering patient information. To specify metric units, use the accompanying radio buttons to select the following: cm, kg, and/or micromol/L. Alternatively use the peripheral UC calculator to manually convert units.

The peripheral calculator tabs include: IBW, BMI, UC, and f(x). The IBW and BMI peripherals calculate Ideal Body Weight and Body Mass Index respectively. The aforementioned UC tab assists with manual unit conversion, and the f(x) tab outlines the set of formulas used to produce the results. Further formula introspection can be gained by expanding/collapsing results screen headings. Simply tap any heading with the rightward arrow to expand the section, and conversely tap any already-expanded section's heading (designated with a downward arrow) to collapse it.
